In the pioneer days, Korean Home Economics Association (KHEA) organized monthly meetings. Each month KHEA organized meetings such as seminars, special lectures, demonstrations and group meetings based on current issues of Home Economics, woman’s right, transforming recent information into modern home life, etc. The first nationwide Korean Home Economics Association conference was held November 4, 1961 in Dong Duk Women’s University with a theme of “Home Economics: New Directions”. Subsequent conferences took place either in October or in November until 1978.
Since 1979, the KHEA has organized nationwide conferences two times a year, usually in the last week of April and October, and 1-2 workshops yearly on a variety of topics. Conferences and Workshops organized by the KHEA have been highly attended events that allow scholars in every aspect of the Home Economics field to meet together and learn from one another. These meetings have included individual research presentation, symposia, invited lectures based on the theme of conference and discussion sessions. These have been times for unparalleled professional development and renewal.
The Korean Home Economics Association hosted several Korea-Japan Joint Home Economics seminars in Seoul, Korea. The seminars took place in 1979, 1982, 1985, 1990 and 1997. The 7th Korea-Japan Joint Home Economics Seminar took place in July 19, 1997 with a theme of “Information Society and Culture in Living Environment: a Comparison of Korean and Japanese Culture”. Due to overlapping of many international meetings, the Korea-Japan Joint Home Economics Seminar was discontinued after the 7th meeting. In 1997, KHEA hosted the 9th Asian Regional Association for Home Economics (ARAHE) conference that was held July 16-18 in Seoul, Korea with 492 in attendance. The theme of the conference was “New Paradigm of Home Economics for 21st Century: Challenges and Perspectives”.
In 2016, KHEA hosted the 23th IFHE World Cogress that was held July 31 through August 6 in Daejun, Kora with over 10,000 from about 41 countries in attendance. The theme of the conference was “Hope and Happiness: The role of Home Economics in the pursuit of Hope & Happiness for individual and communities now and in the future”.
